Welcome to the USF Center for Cryptographic Research!

About the Crypto Center

The Center for Cryptographic Research (CCR) was created in 2020. It brings together core members from the departments of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering, as well as affiliated members with a broad diversity of profiles (arts, business, education, medicine …). The CCR received initial funding from the USF Strategic Investment Pool. In addition, the members of the CCR have been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute for Standards and Technology, the Department of Energy, CyberFlorida, the Simons Foundation, Cisco, Nvidia, and Bosch. In particular, two of the core faculty members have received the NSF CAREER award. The CCR has a lab in CMC367 fully equipped for high performance computing research, distance learning, and meetings. This facility is opened to all members.

Research

The members of the CCR perform research in a very broad range of topics in cryptology including fundamental aspects such a computational mathematics and the theory of cryptography to the more applied ones such as lightweight implementations, side channel attacks and fault injection attacks directly on the hardware. In addition, the CCR is at the forefront of the design of crypto-enabled tools to fight pandemics and improve the management of medical data.

Outreach

The CCR pursues outreach initiatives to broaden participation in cryptography and cybersecurity in general. One of our flagship initiative is the annual CodeBreakHERs cybersecurity summer camp for young girls. This camp runs free of charge and provides a unique hands-on experience on cryptography.  The CodeBreakHERS’ mission is to build a pipeline of cybersecurity professionals for the nation. The CodeBreakHERS aims to contribute to the increase of the proportion of women in the cybersecurity workforce. Female participation in this industry ranges from 10% to 25% depending on the sources. The CCR also partners with the College of the Arts on a series of animated videos featuring two characters, Locke and Keya, in situations where cybersecurity and cryptography saves the day.

Education

The CCR actively participates in the dissemination of educational content in cryptography. The members of the CCR provide the course material on cryptography through this website (course notes and youtube videos). In addition, the CCR partners with the Florida Center for Instructional Technology and CyberFlorida on the development of educational videos in all aspects of cryptography.
